When it comes to match 3 games, you know that everything that could’ve been done has already been done, right? Well, don’t rush to that conclusion – as I did – because Silver Tale is truly an unique game and a title that does try to bring some new elements to the genre and I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised on at least a few occasions while playing it and discovering its features and mechanics.
The story isn’t too encouraging to start with, as we’ve heard it already on numerous occasions: the king is very sick and only the Silver Holly, an extremely rare plant, can save him. You are chosen to find the cure for the king and an adventure of epic proportions begins!
Fortunately, Match 3 games do not need a good story to keep you playing – and even though the story itself doesn’t bring anything new to the table, it still is greatly executed, with amazing voiceovers and high quality cutscenes. But it’s the gameplay and specifically some great gameplay elements that make this game great.
You will do a lot of matching and unlocking and collecting as you normally do in any Match 3 game, but there’s a bit extra: you will find followers who help you, you will complete quests and collect items straight on the playing board and you will have multi level stages where you will have to “jump” from a board to another to keep on playing. And trust me, all these minor goodies, combined with an otherwise perfect gameplay, will keep you entertained for hours.
What I did not like was the lack of a timer – or the option to have one. Instead, you have a limited number of moves to complete a level, which is definitely more challenging than the regular timer. Sometimes, I just wish to just be allowed to win, ha! But if you’re looking for a real challenge, you will find it here, without the game being impossible.
Visually, things are looking good! The items that you have to match look good on the board and you won’t have any problems noticing the different ones. The cutscenes are well made and the extra characters and screens that you will visit during your adventure will leave you with a pleasant taste. There’s no room for visuals or effects that are extremely spectacular in match 3 games, so Silver Tale delivers exactly what you would expect to get from a good game.
I will always praise a game (or a developer) that tries to bring something new to the table, and even if we’re not talking about revolutionary features or extreme changes to the genre, Silver Tale delivers. And it’s surely one of the best match three games I’ve played recently, so if you are a fan of the genre, you should definitely give it a try!
